I am writing in regards to my car being towed from the lot located at 525 Marquette that is owned by your church. On Monday November 3rd, 2014 at approximately 8:45 am I was in route to take my infant son to daycare and ran out of gas. Rather than leaving my car parked in the street I thought the proper thing to do would be to push the car in the empty lot and proceed to go get gas. Upon returning to the lot I noticed my car was missing. After speaking with someone who claims to be the pastor of the church I was then notified that my vehicle was towed to John’s towing.

First let me state I am a single mother of two, every day is a struggle for me mentally, physically, and financially. So to incur a $187 bill in order to retrieve my car was a hard blow to the face. It is apparent I struggle financially; running out of gas is an obvious sign of that but then to have to dish out $187 is mind blowing. But what other alternative was I left with? My parents purchase that car for me because I needed reliable transportation to get back and forth to work and get my children to school and daycare and somehow once again I found a way to disappoint them by thinking I was doing the right thing. For a single mother of two $187 is a large sum of money, so I’m now left with the dilemma on who or what pays the price for such a hefty fine…do I (A) not pay my rent, (B) not pay a utility bill, or (C) not provide for children! How would you choose???

The amount charged is the same figure that may be charged for a very serious offence such as drunk driving. Under no circumstances would parking in a vacant parking lot, causing absolutely no obstruction, and not taking up any space (given that the park lot was empty) be considered as serious of an offence as drunk driving. Upon speaking with the Pastor I was met with a very rude response from him, that my car being towed was not his problem! My family, as well as me and my children have been an outstanding member of local churches as long as I can remember. I have always seen Pastors take empathy on others and help uplift them not knock them down spiritually or financially and I have to say I saw none of that in the man I spoke with.

I am writing this letter because I am outraged and think the whole situation is disgraceful. Despite parking on private property, I didn't park in anyone's spot and I wasn't causing an obstruction. I was unaware of the potential threat to my car and had simply parked there briefly while I ran to the gas station. I know writing this letter won’t change the fact that my car was towed and I had to pay $187 to recover it but I hope the Pastor of the congregation take heed on the next individual who end up in a situation similar to what I encountered. Please feel free to contact me in regards to my letter and may God continue to bless his soul….
